Three and half hours from Colorado Springs nestled among the San Juan Mountains of the Rocky Mountains sits the town of South Fork, Gateway to the Silverthread Scenic Byway. The Silverthread Scenic Byway is one of twenty-six in the state, and travels through three of Colorado’s most beautiful towns; South Fork, Creede, and Lake City. All three of these towns provide opportunities for hiking, trout fishing, and are affordable.

Travel up the Silverthread twenty miles to Creede. The highway follows the Rio Grande through a breathtaking canyon. Keep your eyes open for bighorn sheep, our state animal.

When you get to Creede, you’ll notice that the locals are friendly; they all wave. Creede is home to the Creede Repertory Theatre, one of the top ten places to see Broadway-caliber productions off of Broadway. Main Street is full of shops for all. From the rock shop at Rare Things to fudge at the Trading Post, everyone will be happy. History Buffs will enjoy the Creede Museum and the Underground Mining Museum. Be sure to give yourself two hours to enjoy the Bachelor Loop Tour. Wheeler Geologic Monument, the state’s first monument, can be accessed via foot or ATV. If hiking a fourteener (mountains over 14000’) is your thing, San Luis Peak can be done in a day.

Continue on up the Silverthread to Lake City, the home of Alfred Packer. In Lake City, you may rent an ATV and drive over to Engineer Pass for a unique way to enjoy the backcountry.

Blue Mesa Reservoir is the end of the Silverthread. The reservoir is full of various fish from trout to pike to salmon to catfish. Travel along US 50 back to the Springs. Celebrate Our Nation's Independence With Us in Southwestern Colorado!

South Forkfireworks South Fork & Creede Colorado July 4th starts the celebration off with their town parade on July 3rd. From the banks of the Rio Grande River, you may watch your duck race it's way to the finish in the "Lucky Duck River Run". After the duck race, head on over to Rickle's Area for the 5th Annual Rock The Rio Grande Rodeo.The day concludes with fireworks.


Creede Colorado July 4th ParadeJuly 3rd & 4th, head on up to Creede for the Day's of '92. This two-day event begins with a plane flying down the canyon signaling the start of the parade and is filled with vendors, a beer garden, and the state mining competition. Head on over to the Mineral County Fairgrounds for a special performance of the Creede Chute Out. This year's fireworks display, on July 4th, will be the largest display fired over Creede. You do not want to miss the Day's of '92.
